As part of the Programme for Interdisciplinary Resilience Studies Guest Speaker Series, we have invited Professor Jonathan Rigg to host a PIRS seminar, Uncertain times, dangerous places, resilient people: researching risk in South and Southeast Asia, on Wednesday the 4th of November 2026 from 14:00 until 16:00. The talk will be held in Building 29, Room 2075 on Highfield Campus.

Abstract: Jonathan is Chair of Human Geography in the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol. Before that, he was at the National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute. His research focuses on agrarian change and rural livelihoods in Southeast and South Asia. He has undertaken fieldwork in Thailand, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. He has recently completed two projects related to this talk, on extreme weather and outdoor work in urban Vietnam and on landslides and rural livelihoods in Nepal.
